Refutation of claiming that there is no need for second-best because we can always uphold what is worthwhile for the conjunction of all persons:

  • This view does not have a proper name, but may be referred to as a variety of "overoptimism."
  • I can sympathize with anyone who would like to avoid tragedies at all cost, but that does not mean that the way to go is to elminate the very concept of "tragedy." There simply are situations in which not everyone can be (well) served.
  • It follows that there sometimes are "salvage" jobs where what is best for all cannot be realized.
